Giant Steps Hosts Dr. Temple Grandin, Named one of USA Today’s 2025 Women of the Year,

to benefit Chicagoland’s Autism Community

 

NAPERVILLE, IL – Giant Steps is thrilled to announce its Annual Denim & Diamonds Charity Gala, an evening of inspiration and impact featuring world-renowned autism advocate Dr. Temple Grandin as the honored guest and keynote speaker. Dr. Grandin, recently named a USA Today 2025 Women of the Year honoree, is an acclaimed expert in animal science and a trailblazing voice in the autism community, she will share her unique perspectives with gala attendees. Her journey of overcoming challenges with autism, portrayed by Claire Danes in the award-winning HBO film "Temple Grandin," has inspired millions worldwide.

“For over 25 years, Giant Steps has been at the forefront of providing comprehensive services to individuals with autism in the Chicagoland area. Welcoming Dr. Temple Grandin as our honored guest is a profound privilege,” said Dr. Sylvia Smith, Executive Director of Giant Steps. “Her groundbreaking work has transformed autism advocacy and awareness, offering hope and inspiration to countless individuals and families.”


Funds raised from the Giant Steps Gala directly contribute to essential programs and services, including:


  • Educational Programs: Specialized classroom environments and individualized educational programs (IEP) tailored to each student's strengths and needs.
  • Therapeutic Services: Up to 40% of children with autism are nonverbal or struggle with language. Giant Steps’ speech, occupational, and music therapy programs enhance communication, social, and daily living skills.
  • Vocational Training: With 85% of autistic adults unemployed or underemployed, Giant Steps’ job skills programs prepare students for the workforce, increasing independence and community integration.
  • Recreational and Social Activities: Extracurricular programs that promote social interaction, self-confidence, and wellness are essential for holistic development.
  • Family Support and Resources: With autism-related costs averaging $60,000 per year, Giant Steps provides guidance, training, and resources to families, helping ease the financial and emotional burden of care.
